Titleist Pro V1 vs TaylorMade TP5: Which Reclaimed Tour Ball Fits Your Game?

October 20, 2026

I wonder how much money golfers spend trying to find the perfect equipment.

A new driver, different irons, another putter. I’ve done it myself. I’m always trying to improve my game and keep up with my son, who plays to a 2 handicap.

But will a different golf ball really make that much difference?

Possibly. The bigger question is whether it’s going to make a difference for you.

Two Premium Golf Balls

The Titleist Pro V1 and TaylorMade TP5 are both premium golf balls designed for golfers who want distance, feel and control around the greens.

Both use multi-layer construction and urethane covers, but their designs aren’t identical.

The Pro V1 is known for its softer feel, controlled flight and short-game spin. The TP5 is TaylorMade’s softer-feeling tour-ball option, designed to balance speed, flight and control.

And remember, both companies offer other models. The Pro V1x and TP5x have their own performance characteristics.

You can’t assume they’re all interchangeable just because they’re premium golf balls.

I’ve Been There With Equipment

I recently purchased a new set of irons. After playing with them all season, I started wondering whether I got fitted at the wrong time of year.

My fitting was in February, after I hadn’t played all winter. Now, toward the end of the season, my swing is definitely different.

Does that mean the fitting was wrong? Not necessarily. But it makes me question how representative my swing was that day.

I think golf balls deserve the same consideration.

What’s working for you today? What are you trying to improve? Are you looking for a different flight, more greenside control or just something that feels better?

And can you actually notice the difference?

You Don’t Have to Commit to One Brand

One of the things I like about reclaimed golf balls is having the opportunity to experiment without paying full retail prices for every model.

I currently play the TP5x because I like how it performs for me. That doesn’t mean it’s the right ball for everyone.

And I’ll admit, when I’m having a bad round, sometimes I’ll put the TP5x away and play something I found that day or another ball I don’t mind losing.

Is switching balls going to fix my swing? No. Unfortunately, that part is still up to me.

If you’re considering a Pro V1 or TP5, compare their characteristics using Rush’s Ball Comparison.

You can also try the Ball Fitter to narrow down which models might suit your game.

So Which One Should You Buy?

I wouldn’t tell you to switch brands just because one company released a newer model or because a professional golfer uses it.

If you like your Pro V1, there’s nothing wrong with sticking with it. If you’re curious about the TP5, try it.

And if you want to experiment, Build Your Mix may let you include both in an eligible 12-ball order.

You might discover something that works better for you. Or you might find that the ball you’ve been playing is already a pretty good choice.

Golf is hard enough without convincing ourselves that every bad shot requires another equipment purchase.
